Movies

These movies provide a quick (30 sec) tour of different geologic structures and how they are exposed in topography. Click on the movie name to view in this window or download to view and save on your computer. All movies are in MPEG4 format and are about 10 MB each.

Structure Volume illustrative imageStructure Volume (SV): a 3D geology structure rendered by showing the structure on the 6 sides of a rectangular box. These movies are named with the scheme SV_structure.mp4 (e.g., SV_anticline.mp4)

Topography Exposed Structure illustrative imageTopography Exposed Structure (TES): a 3D geology structure rendered by showing only the exposure of the structure on a digital topographic surface. The labels A1 through C2 refer to different digital topographies. A2 is the same topography as in A1 but rotated 90 degrees with respect to the geologic structure (and the same goes for B2 and C2). These movies are named with the scheme TES_structure_topo.mp4 (e.g., TES_anticline_A1.mp4)

Topography Exposed Structure with Layer illustrative imageTopography Exposed Structure with Layer (TESL): Same as TES but includes one or two layers rendered with transparent color. These layers can be see both below and above the topographic surface to aide in visualizing the shape of the structure, how it extends beneath the topographic surface and the part of the structure that has been eroded away. These movies are named with the scheme TESL_structure_topo.mp4 (e.g., TESL_anticline_A1.mp4)

Archive files made using the command "tar –zcvf", so these are tarred, gzipped archives and on a MAC or LINUX machines these should automatically open up to a folder when double-clicked. The folder will have the same name as the file with the movies inside. For linux one can also use the command "tar –zxcf filename.tgz"

Using Movies For Homework and Labs:
The 27 different topography-exposed structure (TES) movies are also provided without a title slide and simply numbered instead of named by structure type with the Exercises. These can be used for student exercises in which the student is tasked with determining what the structure is based on its exposure in the topography. The TESL movies can then be used as “solutions” to these exercises as they show a full layer of the structure that is continuous both above and below the topography.
